This is Marilyn nuzzling newborn daughter Akili at the Memphis Zoo, moments after birth. Did you know that the birth of a giraffe includes an 18′ drop to the earth for baby? Hello! Then just after the baby stands up the mother does the most unimaginable thing. She kicks her baby tumbling! And after baby [...]

This summer, by invitation, I entered three pieces into the American Art Awards. Much to my delight and surprise, “Pearl” took 1st Place in the 31st Category – Portrait of Someone Famous. The other two entries won in the 5th Category – Pastel; The Cobbler took 3rd place and Flower Girl took 5th. I’m so [...]

Lil’ E or Elvis as my sister calls him is one small dog. I joke that my Emmah poops bigger than her Lil’ E. It was only due to a series of unusual events that my sister actually became Lil’ E’s mom. Now, she can’t imagine life without him. Funny how these little creatures have [...]

The wolf is finished…this was a lot of fun because I also had a chance to photograph some wolves while in Washington this year.

We’re learning the step-by-step process of Lesley’s technique to painting fur. Learning fur from the fur-master

They say if you bring home a tortoise plan on having him (or her! Or them!!!) for a very long time. As a matter of fact, they will probably outlive you, seeing as how the life span of these creatures can be well beyond 80 years.

The only problem with doing a self-portrait is that you have to look at yourself for a v e r y l o n g t i m e. This is something I do not care to do. That was the bad part. The good part is that I have my own keepsake of my kitty and me.

I love that we’ve made our new home in Texas, but at heart, I’m just a California Girl. There are many things that I miss about California: my family, the beach, my old church family, the beach, California Poppies carpeting the hills and did I mention I miss the beach!?

I am awestruck by the work of the Old Masters. I never tire of studying their works. I particularly loved Vermeer’s The Girl With The Pear Earring. In 2003, a movie was made about the famous painting, starring Scarlett Johansson. After watching the film (literally – it was probably 11:00 pm!), I was so inspired that I busted out my oils and got started.

I met Abigail as we were preparing for an upcoming missions trip. She and her family had recently returned from a long-term mission in France. When they came to the states, Abigail had to leave her classical guitar behind since she had no case and no means to have it transported here. I was deeply moved by this young girl who had left all that she’d ever known and couldn’t even do her craft. A number of families put our pennies together and presented Abigail with a gift certificate to guitar center. This is Abby enjoying her new guitar.

This painting was inspired through cooperation with the Best Friends Animal Society. Best Friends rescues thousands of animals every year and has a giant network across the country to help them find good homes. For many, the animals end oup at the 30,000 acre sanctuary in Kanab, Utah. One fortunate young one is named Charlotte. Charlotte was abandoned by her owners and ended up at Best Friends. She was our model here, photographed by Gary Alan Kalpakoff.

This is the excerpt. It replaces the auto-generated excerpt of the above post with hand-crafted text to describe this post.

I shot this photo and placed it in an album, saying, “I’ll have to paint him someday.” Well that “someday” turned into many days! This one has well over 100 painting hours invested in it. But it truly was…

I got together with a couple of girlfriends for coffee. One of the ladies brought a folder with photos of paintings she had done. In it was a photo of this little girl. I was intrigued by the Rembrandt lighting in the photo, as well as the timeless look of the child. “I have to [...]

This painting is a combination of oil and pastel on Kitty Wallis paper. The under painting is done in oils, using complementary colors to the finished piece. It was fun and faster to paint than pets and/or their people. This still life is part of our private collection and hangs in our kitchen over our [...]
