I am awestruck by the work of the Old Masters. I never tire of studying their works. I particularly loved Vermeer’s The Girl With The Pear Earring. In 2003, a movie was made about the famous painting, starring Scarlett Johansson.  After watching the film (literally – it was probably 11:00 pm!), I was so inspired that I busted out my oils and got started.

I combined the film’s model with the garments from the original painting. The finished product hangs in my studio to this day. Did you know the original painting was referred to as “The Mona Lisa of the North?”

I’ve seen this painting in person and it almost looks like a photograph of Scarlet! @nancy…kudos on the stellar work!

There’s something ‘haunting’ about this painting and I mean that in the best of ways. It’s old-world yet modern. Her mouth and eyes are from today but her face and clothing look like days gone past. BEAUTIFUL

Thanks, Joe! I agree with your “haunting” description. The scene in the movie where Johannes Vermeer (Colin Firth) poses Griet (Scarlett Johansson) was SO incredibly powerful! It was indeed truly haunting!
I just wish I could get a “true” photo of the painting with all its luster and gorgeous colors. This picture simply doesn’t do it justice.
I love this painting too! I often wonder if Scarlett would like to have it. ;-)
