This painting was inspired through cooperation with the Best Friends Animal Society. Best Friends rescues thousands of animals every year and has a giant network across the country to help them find good homes. For many, the animals end up at the 30,000 acre sanctuary in Kanab, Utah. One fortunate young one is named Charlotte. Charlotte was abandoned by her owners and ended up at Best Friends. She has trouble walking, so I identify with her struggle. She was our model here, photographed by Gary Alan Kalpakoff.

This piece was entered in the Pastel Society of the Southwest art exhibit in the Fall of 2008 and won the Peoples’ Choice Award.

    This is one of my favorite paintings. I dig the story behind it. It looks amazing in person. You should see the fur hair up close. Beautiful!

    Yep. I remember you went to pick up my painting and said, “Who put this award on my wife’s painting?” I guess we were both surprised =-)

    This is fabulous Nancy. Not only is the cat gorgeous (okay I am biased when it comes to cats) :) but the whisker grooves and the eye pigments are insane!!!     Thanks, Eve. One of the most common responses I hear is, “That’s a painting?” or “That’s not a photo?” Funny thing is, though I shoot for realism, I also aim to be “painterly” as well. Okay, I’ve got to ask – did you think this was a photo or a painting?
